President Kamala Harris

As I write this, the most consequential election in our country in our lifetime is six days away. I don’t know who will win, but I believe Kamala Harris will be the next President of the United States.

Voting is an honor and a privilege, and our democracy is worth fighting for. What we all have witnessed since Vice President Harris announced her candidacy is a tsunami of hope. 75,000 people came to Washington DC to hear her speech. There’s power in numbers. I believe love is far more powerful then hate and I believe Vice President Harris will win.

When Kamala Harris takes the oath of office, (and yes, I know that as I write this it’s an unknown but I believe she will), our work isn’t over. We need to protect our democracy by supporting the people and organizations who work hard every day doing just that. And we need to support independent journalism because we have seen how legacy media’s spineless oligarchs roll over and obey in advance.

We also need to cherish the communities we live in. Say hi to your neighbors, lend a helping hand when needed, get active in your community in whatever way speaks to you. In times of stress, you want your neighbors to have your back. Weaving together a web of community support is what makes the house you live in a home, and what makes our streets a neighborhood.

Here are just a few recommendations for pro-democracy organizations and journalists whose opinions I value. I know there are more. Let’s join together to protect this country we so dearly love, so we can ensure freedom for our grandchildren and for future generations.

From Democracy Poem by Langston Hughes

Democracy will not come

Today, this year

Nor ever

Through compromise and fear....

...Freedom

Is a strong seed

Planted

In a great need.
