Comforter in Chief

In the New York Times today, there’s a front page story on how Bush meets privately with families of dead soldiers to offer them hugs and comfort. I suspect there’s another story here. Bush is seeking his own redemption for his disastrous Iraq policy. If any family of the fallen tells him their child did not die in vain, that they still support him as President, he gets a soul reprieve, however brief.

Personally, I’m glad he gets the comfort — not for him, but for the families themselves. Can you imagine knowing (like Cindy Sheehan and countless others), that the child you bore, loved and raised died too young for no reason at all?
